This summer has been one of my busiest yet, and one of the highlights was working on a large order for the Falkland Islands. It was my third year creating for them, and every time I pack up a box ready to travel halfway across the world, I’m reminded of just how special handmade work can be.
Clutch bags in Bluff Cove Tweeds
Why the Falklands?
It all began a few years ago when a farm at Bluff Cove, a wonderful visitor attraction in the Falklands, got in touch. They were looking for unique, handmade gifts that would capture the spirit of the islands — pieces that could reflect their story and landscape.
Bluff Cove produces its own beautiful tweeds, woven from the farm’s own wool on the Falkland Islands and then crafted into fabric here in the Scottish Borders. The colours echo the wild, open landscape of Bluff Cove, and it has been a joy to transform these tweeds into a range of products for them, including clutch bags, lavender purses, and corsages.
Of course, no Falklands collection would be complete without penguins! With Penguin Walks along the beach delighting visitors from cruise ships, I also set about designing little Bentu and Rockhopper penguins. They quickly became favourites, and ever since, I’ve been delighted to create new pieces each year for their shop.
The Making Process
From selecting fabrics that bring character and durability, to carefully stitching the designs, each bag takes time and care. This year, my studio was filled with penguin faces smiling up at me as I worked! It’s a reminder that even in the Scottish Borders, my craft can travel and connect with people on the other side of the world.
What It Means to Me
As a maker, seeing my work enjoyed and valued across the world is both humbling and motivating. I love knowing that visitors to the Falklands are taking home a little piece of Scottish craft with them. It feels like a connection between two very different but equally beautiful landscapes.
Looking Ahead
While summer was busy with penguins, fairs, and commissions, I’m now turning my focus to new designs and to the festive season. I’ll be taking part in Deck the Halls at the SEC in Glasgow this November, and the Art & Craft Fair at Springwood Park, Kelso. If you’re local, I’d love you to pop by and say hello.
Handmade has a way of carrying stories — from Scotland to the Falklands and back again. Thank you for being part of that journey with me.
