Bag size, Structure and strap fit

A beautiful bag still needs to work for real life. Here's what to check on size, layout, structure and straps, so what you order fits how you'll actually use it, not just how it looks in a photo.

What size do you actually need?

Bag size directly affects day-to-day practicality- the right size holds your essentials comfortably, without adding unnecessary bulk. A well-chosen everyday bag should comfortably hold a phone, glasses, purse, keys, water and a few small extras like lip balm or hand cream.

When shopping online, look for clear dimensions, photos that show scale against a person or a familiar object, and a description of what actually fits inside - a good maker will always be specific rather than vague.

Internal organisation

How easy it is to find things inside your bag matters more than it might seem. Look for:

  • Zipped pockets for valuables

  • Slip pockets for quick-access items

  • Clear interior photos when shopping online

  • A layout that actually supports your daily routine, not just looks tidy in a photo

Structured vs soft bag

Structured bags are designed to hold their shape and create a polished, refined silhouette — ideal for work, events, and anyone who prefers a clean, tailored look. They protect what's inside, hold their shape over time, and tend to photograph beautifully. However they can be heavy and hard.

Softer, relaxed bags offer a lighter feel and a more casual, mould-to-the-body fit - easy to pack, comfortable for everyday use, and a natural choice if comfort matters more to you than a crisp silhouette.

Neither is objectively better; it's genuinely about what you'll reach for most.

I have built my bags somewhere in the middle they have structure ( they can have up to 5 internal layers) but they also have a relaxed fit, they are not hard. They are lightweight, and will mould to the body for comfort but still have structure to protect what is inside. This means they do expand slightly too, but can pack flat when travelling.

Strap length and comfort

How you like to wear a bag is personal, and may depend on the occasion - but if you're buying something you'll wear on the shoulder or across the body, checking the strap matters.

  • Check whether the strap is fixed, adjustable or removable

  • If it's fixed, check the length will genuinely suit you - makers can often adjust this on request, especially for a commission

  • Wider straps are usually more comfortable than narrow ones over a full day

  • A removable strap can give you flexibility - turning a handbag bag into a crossbody, or back again
